We are looking for a Safety Manager to join our Campbell, CA Team!
Job Summary
The Safety Manager is responsible for managing the company’s safety program ensuring it operates at an optimal level to provide a safe and healthy work environment for all employees under their jurisdiction by working to prevent workplace accidents and incidents. Maintain and promote WVCC’s safety-first ownership culture by performing all tasks at established WVCC standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Below is a compilation of primary job duties and responsibilities for this role, supplemented by certain supportive tasks. - Ability to work in high production environment (50+ hours/week, including some nights and weekends as needed) and respond quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines. Communicate daily with the Safety Director and local operations management.
- Able and willing to assist operations to identify training needs and provide collaborative coaching, counseling, and guidance as needed.
- Attend local scheduling and coordination meetings as needed or directed.
- Complete timely investigation to identify root cause of all safety related incidents, accidents, and/or OSHA violations and report findings to the Safety Director.
- Demonstrate a complete understanding and effectively manage WVCC’s Safety and Health Programs (IIPP, HIPP, etc.)
- Continual progression and overall understanding of underground construction as outlined in the list of technical skill requirements.
- Coordinate and participate in WVCC New Hire Orientation process as needed.
- Coordinate lost-time injuries with Human Resources to ensure appropriate procedure is followed and paperwork completed for job protect leave.
- Demonstrate ability to conduct monthly all hands safety meetings, and other meetings, with confidence and professionalism.
- Determine if personal protective equipment is adequate and make necessary changes to provide additional protection when needed.
- Demonstrate professional collaboration and coordination with Human Resources and Legal as needed which may include Worker’s Compensation, General Liability, and auto claims management.
- Ensure compliance of WVCC’s facility and work site safety inspection program. This includes the timely posting of safety inspection in appropriate software with detailed reports and pictures.
- Ensure effective working relationships with employees, owner representatives, agencies, clinics, and medical testing facilities through effective collaboration and communication.
- Ensure timely and effective investigation of all accidents and incidents, provide support in the preparation of material and evidence for the Company’s use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
- Exercise Stop Work Authority until all safety issues are addressed and resolved.
- Know and understand pertinent Fed-OSHA, Cal-OSHA, and other safety regulations relevant to our industry.
- Make training recommendations beyond the required company policies to meet site specific requirements.
- Participate in the administration of WVCC’s Drug and Alcohol Program as needed.
- Participation in the Incident Review Committee, including actual presentations, analysis, final resolution, and disciplinary measures.
- Proactively ensure that all employees and managers have been trained in safety, health, and environmental requirements for the performance of their respective jobs, and that safe practices are reinforced on an ongoing basis.
- Provide consistent, transparent, and positive communication with local operations regarding safety inspection results, investigations, discipline, and the management of high-risk employees.
- Provide appropriate safety, health and environmental safety signs, posters, barriers, and other materials at local offices, jobsites, etc.
- Proactively participate in WVCC’s safety and health performance goals which include improving the Experience Modification Rate (EMR) and Total Recordable Incident (TRI) rate.
- Prepare Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) as needed.
Qualifications
- Education/Experience: 4-year degree preferred and a minimum of 5 years safety management in the construction industry is required. Outstanding knowledge of safety, health, environmental regulations, and construction industry orders.
- Certificates/Licenses: OSHA 30 and a valid CA driver’s license in good standings (must be 18 years of age or older to operate a company vehicle).
- Computer Skills: Strong computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and train others to use company technology.
- Interpersonal Skills: Must have the ability to interface with a wide variety of people including clients, employees, managers, agencies, and the public. Ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with Operations Managers. Ability to teach and train as needed.
- Leadership: Must be able to influence the actions of others in a desired direction; exhibit judgment in leading others to worthwhile objectives.
- Mathematical Skills: Able to perform construction mathematics calculations.
- Organization and Planning: Must be able to manage individual priorities and plan work activities for themselves and others. Develop realistic action plans while being sensitive to time constraints and resources.
- Problem Solving: Use a systematic approach to solve problems through analysis and evaluate alternate solutions. Use logic, mathematics, or other problem-solving tools in data analysis when generating solutions.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
- Hearing adequate to perform job duties in person.
- Able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone.
- Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties and respond to dangerous situations.
- Frequent bending, reaching, standing, walking, squatting, sitting, pushing, and pulling.
- Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard and other electronic devices. Repetitive motions that include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Able to safely ascend or descend step ladders, stairs, ramps, etc.
- Adjust or move objects up to 20 pounds in all directions without assistance.
- May work in areas where hazardous substances are present.
- Must be willing and able to operate a company vehicle.
- Able to safely ascend and descend ladders, stairs, ramps, and scaffolds.
- Able to work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment.
- Able to position one-self in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, and tunnels.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Able to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the shift.
- Able to work in the sun, heat, wet, dry, dirty, and dusty conditions.
Salary
- $97,400/year – $146,000/year
